چکیده

Keratinocytes protect themselves from UV-induced damage and death by signalling to melanocytes produce transfer melanin their nuclei further UV damage. The keratinocyte-melanocyte communication axis defines the tanning response, which is integral epidermal homeostasis. We studied effects of occasional, moderate chronic UVA/UVB exposure on keratinocytes in vitro using immortalised human monoculture. show that led signature 7 mutations with predominant C>T nucleotide substitutions across genome. observed any treatment history were better able withstand exposure, showing decreased sensitivity, despite absence melanocytes. explored our findings vivo immunocompetent wild type mice, a striking decrease sunburn cells (apoptotic keratinocytes), TUNEL, p53 TT-dimers 24 hours after skin had prior significant This response independent protection, as mouse are intradermal do not keratinocytes. These data confers protection independently response. investigating transcriptional immune changes may infer mechanism.

Effects of UV photographs, photoaging information, and use of sunless tanning lotion on sun protection behaviors.

OBJECTIVES To examine the efficacy of UV photographs and information about photoaging (eg, wrinkles and age spots) for increasing the sun protection intentions and behaviors of young adults and to determine whether any effects of this appearance-based intervention could be enhanced by providing a non-UV alternative for achieving a tan (ie, sunless tanning lotion). DESIGN Randomized control tr...

Dermal damage promoted by repeated low-level UV-A1 exposure despite tanning response in human skin.

IMPORTANCE Solar UV irradiation causes photoaging, characterized by fragmentation and reduced production of type I collagen fibrils that provide strength to skin. Exposure to UV-B irradiation (280-320 nm) causes these changes by inducing matrix metalloproteinase 1 and suppressing type I collagen synthesis. The role of UV-A irradiation (320-400 nm) in promoting similar molecular alterations is l...

UV tanning advertisements in high school newspapers.

OBJECTIVE To examine the increasing use of UV tanning parlors by adolescents, despite the World Health Organization recommendation that no one under the age of 18 years use UV tanning devices. DESIGN We examined tanning advertisements in a sample of public high school newspapers published between 2001 and 2005 in 3 Colorado counties encompassing the Denver metropolitan area. RESULTS Tanning...

Chronic nicotine exposure upregulates nicotinic receptors by a novel mechanism.

Nicotine addiction is initiated by its binding to high-affinity nicotinic receptors in brain composed primarily of alpha4 and beta2 subunits. For nicotinic receptors expressed in vivo or heterologously, nicotine exposure over hours to days increases or "upregulates" high-affinity nicotine binding to receptors through a posttranslational mechanism thought to increase receptor numbers. Using hete...
